Step by step
- Initial inspection: unannounced. A score of 13 or fewer points earns an A.
- Re-inspection: if the initial score is 14 or more, an unannounced re-inspection follows, and its score sets the grade.
- Grade card: the restaurant posts the grade or, if contesting a B or C, a Grade Pending card.
- OATH hearing: violations can be disputed, which can reduce points and change the grade.
- Next cycle: timing depends on performance. Better scores mean less frequent inspections.
Other inspection types
The data also includes pre-permit inspections for new restaurants, compliance inspections after a closure, and inspections triggered by complaints. Not every inspection produces a grade.
